Figueres: sense of climate urgency is increasing

Christiana Figueres, UNFCCC – Bonn Climate Change Conference

Atmosphere:
It’s taking place in the context of a positive and constructive tone. Somehow in past years we had discussions on the agenda, and do we agree that we agreed X, Y Z in the last session. And that has not been the case here. Nobody is walking back from anything they have agreed in the past –Doha, Durban, Cancun – and everybody came here pulling up their sleeves and saying let’s get to work.

Ambition:
There is an increasing sense of urgency. I wish it would translate quicker into urgency of action, but that’s not always the case. But I’ve been heartened by governments and non governments who have come to this session and say ‘here is what we can contribute’. But my question is always what else can you do, because it’s very clear nobody is doing enough.

Goals:
In terms of deliverables from Warsaw, the ADP will need over this year to develop. It already has the big picture milestones to 2015 but they will have to develop a more detailed roadmap of what is going to happen. In particular next year, because by the end of 2014 governments do have to put on the table the elements of the draft agreement, and then the draft agreements needs to be on the table by March 2015. That is a daunting task, and they will need to figure out how they are going to get to the next big milestone which is December 2014.
