Rio+20: Benefits of protected areas in Guatemala

Rio+20 (19/06/12): Erik Cabrera  Presidencia de la Republica Consejo Nacional de Areas Protegidas Gobierno de Guatemala (President of the Republic National Council of Protected Areas Government of Guatemala) speaks to Pavilion TV about his experience with working in national parks and protected areas and how sustainability effects poverty in Guatemala.

Cabrera explains how a third of Guatemala’s land is made up of areas that are protected by law. He says that despite the high level of poverty in the country the national areas are sustainable enough to provide opportunities, natural resources and generate electricity thus benefiting communities and igneous people. Cabrera’s advice to similar organisations is a country cannot preserve a protected area if they do not share the wealth.
