Dr Leinen talks about the importance of oceans. She explains that oceans have a huge role to play in the climate as they take up 90% of the heat from carbon dioxide as well as absorbing 30% of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The impacts of this are ocean warming, acidification and deoxygenation. These impacts are problematic for as half the population lives on the coast, which are important for livelihoods and as economic zones. Dr Leinen is very excited as today was the third Oceans Day at COPs and until two hours oceans were mentioned for the first time in the negotiating text, before being subsequently dropped.
