Agriculture responsible for 20% of human-induced emissions

COP18 (06/12/12) – Geoff Orme-Evans, Environment and Climate Change Specialist at the Humane Society International says having had agriculture put back on the table at the last negotiations, its important that it stays there in Doha.

“There are big issues for agriculture that will be compounded by climate change. Animal agriculture is responsible for 20% of human induced emissions, we raised 70bn animals for human consumption in 2010,” says Orme-Evans.

“We want to make sure that these animals are treat humanely but we also want to see smallholder farmers provided with support to adapt to climate change. There is going to be a big expansion in the number of animals reared, especially in the developing world. Often this will occur in industrial settings. “
