COP18 (06/12/12) – Pansang Dolma Sherpa, National Coordinator, NEFIN talks about the need to safeguard indigenous people’s rights in the REDD+ scheme.

She says in Nepal, where REDD programmes are under development it is important that they also consider how to include the rights of those people living in the forest. She stresses that while REDD is a top down approach to forest protection, the implementation takes place using a bottom up approach the inclusion of indigenous knowledge it what will ensuring its success.

She says there are already so many example of where traditional management of the forests by indigenous people means sustainable forest management.
