UN biodiversity talks: week one review from Hyderabad

The first week of negotiations at the Convention of Biological Diversity’s bi-annual conference have now closed.

Agreement has been reached on four texts – plant conservation, taxonomy, biofuels and incentives.

Funding remains a divisive issue. Talks on building a ‘framework’ to channel finance broke down acrimoniously on Friday, and with ministers expected to arrive from Monday onwards, the pressure is starting to rise.

In our week one review, Jane Smart, Global Director of the IUCN takes RTCC through the week’s flashpoints, and offers thoughts on what could be achieved by the end of COP11.
