Editorial policy

How we operate as journalists

We aim to be accurate, fair, balanced and independent in our reporting at all times.

We do not provide “false balance” on the science of climate change and its main causes, because the evidence, as set out in public reports issued by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, is conclusive.

We interview a range of sources for our stories – and where we do not get a response from an individual, government or company after requesting comment, we say so.

We state publicly on each article who has reported, edited and fact-checked our stories. We credit photographers for the pictures we use. Content is published on our website with consent from its authors. We publish original content and do not tolerate plagiarism.

When we make an error, we correct it as quickly as possible after we notice it or it has been brought to our attention by a third party. We state publicly what has been corrected and when.

Our reporters try, whenever possible, to report information from named sources and approach them with respect and fairness. However much of our reporting covers sensitive diplomatic and policy spaces. To bring readers the full picture Climate Home will occasionally rely on sources we cannot name. In such cases, both our reporters and sources are aware of the arrangement.

Sponsored and partner-funded content

Climate Home News sponsors are offered promotion and advertising through the site, our social media channels and our newsletters. They do not have access to editorial decision -making. Acceptance of financial support does not constitute implied or actual endorsement of sponsors or their products, services or opinions.

Sponsored posts run clearly marked on our site and social media. They are provided by sponsors or produced with their guidance. They are not Climate Home News editorial content.

Climate Home also works with funding partners to support the coverage of particular topics through reporting programmes, projects or special reports. The scope of reporting is agreed in advance with the funder and individual articles are commissioned and edited by Climate Home. Activities or content supported in this way are transparently labelled.
