350.org calls for hurricanes to be named after climate change deniers

Leading environmental group calls for Hurricane Sandy and Katrina to be renamed Rubio and Boehner

Here’s a novel one.

US environmental group 350.org wants the World Meteorological Organisation to name hurricanes after climate change deniers.

Or more specifically, after politicians who obstruct policies to cut global emissions.

It wants supporters to sign a petition to the WMO to adopt a “new naming system”. So far it has registered 56,000 of the 75,000 it is aiming for.

“It’s a new day but some songs remain the same. Congress used to have tobacco addition deniers, now it has far too many climate deniers,” said 350 Action policy director Jason Kowlaski.

Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) and House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) feature prominently in a mocked up news show created for the launch.

Currently the WMO develops a list of names that are assigned in alphabetical order to tropical storms as they are discovered in each hurricane season.

Names can be repeated after an interval of six years, but the names of especially severe storms are permanently retired from use.

Let us know what you think on Twitter or Facebook. Is this a clever, inventive stunt, or could singling out individual politicians backfire?
