Trina Solar Limited (NYSE: TSL) is a leading, integrated manufacturer of solar photovoltaic (PV) products from the production of ingots, wafers and cells to the assembly of PV modules. In Antwerp, Belgium, they provided the world’s largest rooftop commercial system with an installed size of 40MW. In Spain, they installed one of the world’s largest ground mounted PV systems with a size of 26MW. In Tibet, Trina Solar provided PV modules where the grid system was not fully developed.

Since the start of 2010, they have introduced their products more widely to Asian markets, including India and Thailand.

Solar energy is abundant, clean, reliable, sustainable and fundamental to tackling climatic change and the environmental impacts faced by human beings today. Its potential to reduce fossil fuel reliance and cut down on greenhouse gas emissions has not come close to being realised.

Clearing stumbling blocks

Solar photovoltaics are still relatively expensive compared with other renewable energy sources, but the technology and production are growing rapidly. As a result, costs are coming down, but it is not currently cost effective. The key to further drive down cost is through technological innovation.

As one of the leading solar energy companies worldwide, Trina Solar plays a significant role in reducing carbon emissions and saving energy, while providing an alternative source of electricity. The company is expected to invest approximately 5% of its annual revenue in research and development activities investigating ways to make solar energy increasingly competitive against grid electricity.

In July 2010, Trina Solar joined the Industrial Liaison Program run by MIT (the US Massachusetts Institute of Technology). This is devoted to promoting university-industry collaboration and technology transfer. The collaboration will help Trina Solar directly access research opportunities with MIT researchers, and stay at the forefront of advanced technological developments. Both Trina Solar and MIT share the same commitment to driving innovation and developing high-quality, solar electricity solutions for businesses and households worldwide.

Building on success

Existing Trina Solar customers can get more power output than before out of their panels because of increased cell efficiency. In 2009, the company’s advanced innovation capabilities boosted its cell efficiency to exceed 14% in commercial production and reach up to 18.8% in laboratory tests.

The cell efficiency of Trina Solar’s latest monocrystalline product, featuring the QuadMax technology, achieved an average efficiency level of 18.5% based on recent pilot production.

This year, Trina Solar also successfully reduced its cell thickness from 380µm to 180µm, saving on silicon material and lowering cost.

As PV modules become more efficient, reliable and affordable, more organisations, enterprises and consumers in developed and developing countries can benefit from this clean and inexhaustible energy that promises a brighter future to the world.
