JTC Corporation promotes and develops dynamic innovative landscapes, in support of Singapore’s economic advancement. Since its establishment in 1968, it has developed 6,600 hectares of industrial land and 4.4 million square metres of ready built facilities. In the process, it has housed more than 7,000 home-grown companies and multinationals.

As populations within cities rise, along with demand on space and resources, urban development must move up a gear to meet needs. Planners nowadays must optimise and enhance a site’s qualities, create a conducive eco-environment for business and meet economic development targets. All at once.

With construction starting last July, CleanTech Park is an initiative outlined in the GB£500,000 Singapore Sustainable Blueprint for building a greener, more energy efficient and sustainable Singapore. It is set to take three phases and twenty years to complete. The cleantech industry overall is expected to contribute GB£1.7 million to Singapore’s GDP and create 18,000 jobs by 2015.

The Park is to be an eco-business area, 50 football fields wide, where up to 50 companies will develop, test-bed and commercialise green and urban solutions before scaling up for the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

Boardroom jungle

Singaporean planning agency, JTC, details how it is bringing the tropical rainforest to the boardroom, giving staff the opportunity to work alongside nature, and benefit from fresh air, lower ambient temperatures, shading and tranquil sights.

Together with consultants Camp, Dresser and McKee, JTC have produced a model which best uses the site’s solar exposure, rainfall, prevailing wind and forest density. It will be built on a greenfield site with already undulating terrain, matured lush greenery and natural streams. Its ring-road layout works with the topography and minimises the amount existing ground is cut into and filled, thus preserving trees, foliage and biodiversity.

The lay of the CleanTech Park is designed to channel and retain storm water into low-lying areas for storage and reuse. This retention plan is part of an estate wide hydrology scheme that is developed by landscape consultants, Atelier Dreiseitl. The network of swales and ponds cleanse the water at various stages and evaporative cooling lowers the park temperature during sunny days. Greywater (from showers, wash basins and so on) will be recycled via a water treatment tank for non-potable uses like irrigation and toilet flushing.

Designing with the elements

Architects have been advised on the optimal solar orientation for buildings, the prevailing wind direction to create wind tunnel effects, and possible rainwater capture areas. And 2,600m2 of roof space will be set aside for solar panel systems. A hydrogen fuel cell plant will be in place on site and a solar dehumidifier will power the air-conditioner units. This latter is more efficient than converting solar energy to electricity before usage. A biodigester on the premises will also make the park a zero-food waste environment.

The Park’s Decentralised District Cooling Network capitalises on technological developments in air conditioning. It ensures excess capacity is shared to power air conditioning for other buildings. Piping will carry chilled water from one building to another as an integral part of the site’s infrastructure. An integrated smart dashboard system will also connect buildings so energy and water usage can be compared on a district-level, providing feedback which allows for continual improvement.

Sky trellises will be constructed between buildings and covered with plants to provide shade and enhance ‘walkability’. Eco-concrete will be used for roads, pavements and drains and roads will be lit with LED street lamps, minimising light pollution and reducing energy consumption by up to 40%.

This is the first of its kind in South East Asia and it is hoped that it will be replicated across the region.
