Grupo Financiero BBVA Bancomer has been recognised as a Socially Responsible Company by the Mexican Philanthropic Centre (CEMEFI) for the tenth consecutive year.

Mexican Bank, Grupo Financiero Bancomer, explains how they are focusing on education as part of a comprehensive environmental strategy and how environmental education is a fundamental element to the bank’s foundation, Fundación BBVA Bancomer, educational programmes.

Since 2003, the Foundation has supported diverse conservation organisations, including Ciceana, Pronatura, Reforestemos México, Vitarbol and Peasma. This backing takes the form of guided tours of protected areas, such as butterfly preserves, as well as the maintenance of learning trails and greenhouses. It also funds ecological awareness workshops, reforestation brigades, school-based greenhouses and adoption of green areas; all of which are carried out in public elementary schools. These efforts are in addition to running specialised ecological awareness and conservation training for teachers. To date, more than 100,000 students have reaped the benefits of these programmes and over 30,000 trees have been planted.

The Reforestation Day gets enthusiastic support of adults and children as they participate in diverse activities under the supervision of specialised staff.

The reforestation programme raises awareness of the ecology and values of conservation of natural resources. Students from México City and the states of México, Jalisco, Querétaro, Michoacán, Chihuahua, Guanajuato and Yucatan participate in the first-hand work of preserving and restoring important green areas.

As part of the company’s corporate social responsibility, the Group’s employees and their families take part in diverse conservation activities, including reforestation brigades, green rallies, conferences and visits to expositions. To date, more than 2,000 employees have been involved and 8,000 trees have been planted.

In addition to these activities, the bank is conserving non-renewable resources and energy in its offices, reducing the use of paper, electricity, water and other supplies. This includes recycling wherever possible, and responsible collection and disposal of electronic waste, such as mobile phones, chargers and batteries.

The Group is also planning the construction of two intelligent, energy-efficient offices. These officially-certified buildings will use 25% less electricity and between 30% and 50% less water.
