COP19: Charles Ian McNeill talks about REDD

COP19 (20/11/13) Charles Ian McNeill from the United Nation Development Program talks about the negotiations on Reduced Emission from Deforestation and Forest Degredation (REDD).

REDD discussions are going well and is probably the only area of the talks progressing at a reasonable speed. Much of the groundwork has been covered with technical issues being dealt with in a constructive manner. It is the only area of the talks to have large amounts of consensus between the Global North and South countries and civil society.

Many indigenous communities still protest against this mechanism as it will have adverse effects on their lives.

There are both risks and benefits to the REDD system but communities are still unsure which will have a greater effect. The UN REDD programme was created to deal with these issues. They have worked to include indigenous communities in every level of the decision making and implementation processes.
