COP19: Li Gao on China’s role within the negotiations

COP19 (14/11/2013) – Li Gao, Deputy Director General, Department of Climate Change National Development and Reform Commision People’s Republic of China talks about China’s position within the talks.

Gao speaks about the progress China has made in terms of green development and finding mechanisms to reduce its carbon emissions. They are hosting a pavilion again this year at COP19 to act as a platform for people to find out more about what China is doing to combat climate change. He also hopes people will use it as opportunity to exchange views on how to promote discussions and the negotiations itself.

He also speaks about the need for adaptations and finance from developed nations for adaptation. Some parties have proposed that for the 2015 agreement there should be a target from global adaptation and China supports this motion. They hope to see a goal for adaptation as well as mitigation. He emphasises the need for developed countries to take a lead in raising ambition. If developed countries raise their level of ambition by 40% by 1990 level there would be not gap he says.
