COP19: Jonathan Radcliffe on the importance of energy storage

COP19 (15/11/2013) – Jonathan Radcliffe, Director for Energy Storage, Centre for Low Carbon Futures, talks about the role energy storage will have in the future.

He says energy storage is one technique that gives electricity during times of peak demand – unlike current wind and solar power technologies which can only be collected during the day. He says, through energy storage, we can use renewables at any time.

He adds that there is a lot of development going into new technologies but that we need cheaper and more effective alternatives that can capture large amounts of wind or solar energy for storage.

For example, at the moment, work is being done on compressed air and cryogenic energy storage. He says that the priority is to continue testing these new technologies.

He says they are looking to scale these technologies up before 2020.
