What does 'Sustainable Land Management' really mean?

What does ‘Sustainable Land Management’ really mean?

Hanspeter Liniger, Senior Research Scientist, Programme Coordinator, WOCAT

“If the system and the land that we are using still maintains its function, if it keeps its productivity, if the water and rainfall that falls on it doesn’t flow away immediately and causes damage and goes into the soil,” he says.

“If the fertility of the land is maintained such that the productivity of the land can keep going, if the land is being used – land and water resources go together – for a generation and the nest generation can still use it – and maintains its ecological functions- then we can say a system is sustainable.”
