Latin America needs access to renewable technologies

Luis Miguel Galindo – Chief of Climate Change Unit, Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC)

Latin America needs more access to renewable technologies, according to a leading UN official from the region.

Speaking to RTCC Luis Miguel Galindo said price signals on their own would not stimulate growth – but allied to technology transfer this could be effective.

“We need price signals, but it’s important to know we respond less than in developed countries,” he said.

“We don’t have enough access to green technologies, and we need these policy measures like regulations and funding for green technology.

“In Latin America we lack technology and other aspects, otherwise we will just have higher energy prices which will shock the economy

“We need fast economic growth in a  low carbon context.”
