COP18: Finding sustainable solutions to waste in Lagos

COP18 (03/12/12) – A.A. Jijoho-Ogun from the Lagos Waste Management Authority talks about the problem of waste in the city and also the solutions they are finding.

She explains that Lagos is one of the fastest growing cities in Africa and is currently home to 18 million people. She says that 10,000 metric tonnes of waste are produced daily and that with Lagos being a small city in terms of landmass, they have to make sure that the waste is managed properly.

As some of the city’s landfills are coming to the end of their lifetime, she explains that they are now trying to work out how to revert the waste into something beneficial. She talks about the compost plants the city has and how two of the waste plants have been able to register for the Clean Development Mechanism.
