COP18: Carbon trading negotiations must work to safeguard indigenous rights

COP18 (06/12/12) – Elizabeth Buchan from Global Voices talks about the relationship between indigenous people and carbon markets.

She explains the many different tracks of the negotiations where this topic could be important including in REDD+ discussions, the CDM, Voluntary Markets outside of the UNFCCC process and the new market mechanisms under discussions.

She talks about the needs for safeguards for indigenous rights, and says that there is not current enough in the text that ensures this. She says that rather than talking about sustainable development, the text should note sustainable development and human rights.
