COP18 (29/11/12) – Vositha Wijenayake, Consultant at SLYCON talks about the need for a greater focus on women in the climate negotiations, particularly when we are talking about issues such as equity.

She uses the example of South Asia which is a agricultural based society, and where a significant amount of burden is on women. She also says we must put it into the context of women being mothers and how these obligations add to the effects of climate change.

She stresses that women have a key role in the households, where everything is concentrated on women and the importance of women’s education in also helping to build the awareness of issues amongst children.

She wants the UN climate talks to highlight the role of women more in many discussions, including talks on equity, on Article 6 on education and youth and on technology transfer.
