COP18: Climate change must be treated as ethical issue, say Pacific Islanders

COP18 (01/12/12) – Tepa Suaesi, Environmental Planning Officer for the Secretariat of Pacific Regional Environment Program talks about the high vulnerability of the Pacific Islands. He says the next century will be critical for island communities’ survival.

He says the world could do more on climate change. He says the Pacific Islands are living with the double edged sword of development and climate change. He says that while they were already dealing with the impacts of globalisation and global development, climate change is further impacting their way of life and exacerbating these challenges.

He says the world must bring down the emissions of greenhouse gases and calls on delegates in Doha to stop thinking of climate change as purely an economic and social issue but to also see it as a ethical issue.
