COP18: Using Census date to track climate vulnerability

COP18 (27/11/12) – Daniel Schensul from the United Nations Population Fund talks about the importance of including the social and population dimensions of climate impacts in adaptation measures.

He says it has often been an under-represented area but that it is vital that we understand the climate impacts that people will be facing in their lives and what resources they have to become more resilient.

He talks about his organisation’s work in using Census data, about both where people live and how they live – including education, occupation, migration, housing and access to services, for example – and map that against other existing data such as satellite imagery and climate projections.

He says this allows them to see not only how many people live in climate exposed areas but also how vulnerable these people are.
