CBD COP11: Rich/poor divide at negotiations is here to stay, says WWF

Nitin Desai, trustee, WWF International, interview: Rio Conventions Pavilion, CBD COP11, 17/10/2012 – Nitin Desai, trustee, WWF International says that while people may worry more about climate change, biodiversity is less abstract and closer to people’s hearts.

However, he says that people worry less about biodiversity because people are less aware of the threat posed by the loss of biodiversity.

On the topic of common but differentiated responsibilities that separates rich and poor countries at UN environmental talks, he says he expects some extra “flexibility” on the term but some differentiation will always be needed.

Despite that, he says rich countries have failed in their responsibilities so far to cut greenhouse gas emissions and protect ecosystems.
