CBD COP11: Rush & reed conservation creates jobs in Sri Lanka

Rio Pavilion TV, CBD COP11 (11/10/2012) – Piyasoma Bentota describes the work of Gamegedara, a Rush & Reed Conservation & Diversification Programme using community knowledge to improve agriculture in Sri Lanka.

Bentota explains that critical problems in Sri Lankan agriculture provoked Gamegedara’s foundation in 1999.

Bentota describes the traditional cultivation of rush and reed plants in the Sri Lankan wetlands that his organisation promotes. He affirms that the traditional knowledge and literature of the craft of using these crops for bag-making is still relevant today, and his organisation uses it in communities in Sri Lanka.
