Rio+20: Funding Development in Africa

Rio+20 (19/06/2012) – Hela Cheikhrouhou, Director, Energy, Environment and Climate Change, African Development Bank talks about the work they do in Africa helping low carbon projects get off the ground.

She explains the two different focuses of her work providing finance for private and public energy projects as well as mobilising bank resources and climate finance resources for climate change operations.

She gives the example of a recent investment of $150 million in Kenya to research and develop geothermal energy – which will finance the drilling, the riskiest part of the project – which when fully operational could generate enough electricity for around 500,000 households and 300,000 business.

She says she hopes the sense of urgency needed for combating environmental crises and climate change is found at the talks in Rio.
