Rio+20: Tackling over-fishing at times of economic uncertainty

Rio+20 (16/06/2012) – Rashid Sumaila, Director of Fisheries Center explains the problem of over-fishing on our oceans and how fisheries can be better management so that resources can be sustained for future generations.

While many countries know that their fish stocks are down, Sumaila says they cannot stop fishing as their communities rely on fishing for jobs. He says by offering training and employment to these people in alternative livelihoods, they would no longer have to rely so heavily on fishing, could pull back and make sure society in the future had more fish, more jobs and more economic success.
