Rio+20: Managing ecosystems to protect against climate change

Rio+20 (15/06/2012) – Didier Dogley, Special Advisor, Government of Seychelles, Ministry of Environment and Energy warns that not enough focus is being placed on adaptation.

Small islands such as the Seychelles are already facing major issues from climate change, and adaptation will be the only way to limit this, but a lot of work still needs to be done to recognised what projects will work where and when.

Dogley explains the potential of ecosystem-based adaptation – that which sees natural systems protected in order protect countries and communities from the extremes being experienced because of climate change. For example in the Seychelles, adaptation funds have helped to begin a project aimed at better allowing the country to manage its hydrological system that will hopefully limit the impact of both prolonged droughts and extreme storms and flooding facing the island.
