Nicholas Stern, CCCEP

Nicholas Stern believes carbon capture and storage (CCS) is crucial in helping achieve a 2 degree long term goal. He explains that in the next 5 years anther 2000 coal fired power plants will be built in Asia and even with cleaner technology emissions from industries such as cement and steel are significant. In 2017 we will have one hundredth of the CCS facilities needed by 2040. Nicholas comments on the UK government’s recent announcement to scrap 1 billion dollars allocated to CCS. He thinks that politicians lack the long-term horizon needed and hopes that the British government recognises the importance of committing to their current carbon targets and the need to diversify their energy portfolio to include renewables, nuclear and CCS.
