Rodolfo Lacy, Deputy of Environmental Policy, Ministry of Environment, Mexico talks about the Mexican government’s work bringing renewable energy to Mexico, in particular, biogas.

He says Mexico is trying to tackle all of its greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) by setting up projects that reduce pollutants such as black carbon and nitrogen oxide.

Mexico is one of the only governments that enacted a climate change law in 2012 and Lacy believes that this has improved climate change action in the country since. He explains that the government has approved three goals which the government is on track to meet which are: to reduce 30% of its GHGs by 2020, to reduce 50% of its emissions by 2050 and to have 35% of Mexico’s electricity mix generated from renewable energy sources by 2024 which has since been amended to 35% by 2018.

On the local level, however, Lacy explains that Mexico’s municipalities are responsible for controlling their air and water pollution as well as the emissions that are emitted from agricultural activities. Lacy says the government is working hard with local communities to help them use more renewables, reduce their emissions and develop more sustainable housing and buildings.
