Francois Hollande became the first leader of an industrialised nation to ratify the Paris Agreement on Wednesday.

In a ceremony at the Elysee Palace, the French president signed a law to join the historic UN climate pact.

He called on other EU states to follow swiftly.

“Signing the Paris Agreement aims to avoid tragedies. Climate change driven disasters, misery,” he said. “We need to respond to the emergency.”
